Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about membership, the free tools and courses, and how the auto loan calculator works. Back to the homepage.
The questions people actually ask, answered straight.
Free tools, free courses, and a plain answer to the question that got you here: why you were declined, or why the payment is too high.
Why did I get declined for an auto loan?
Usually a mix of a lower credit score, a high debt-to-income ratio, or a thin credit file with too little history for a lender to feel confident. Your adverse action notice lists the specific reasons the lender used, and matching those to your credit report is the fastest way to know exactly what to fix.
What credit score do I need to get approved for a vehicle loan?
There is no single cutoff. Many subprime lenders approve people well under 600, though the rate and payment get noticeably better above 660 and again above 720. The calculator on this page gives you an estimate for your own range.
Is CreditForward really free?
Yes. The calculator, the membership, all 18 courses and all 19 tools are free, no card required. Membership stays free for as long as you use it.
Are you a credit repair company?
No. We are an educational platform. We do not charge fees for credit repair services and we do not dispute items on your behalf for money. We teach you how to read your own report, dispute what is wrong yourself, and use free tools to track it.
How does the auto loan approval calculator work?
You give it your estimated credit range and the price of a vehicle you are considering. It applies typical published rate bands for that credit range to estimate a monthly payment, and shows you what the same vehicle would cost someone with strong credit for comparison.
How accurate is the calculator's estimate?
It is an estimate built on typical, published rate ranges, not a real lender's underwriting. Your actual offer depends on the specific lender, your full credit file, your income, and their own overlays. Treat it as a realistic starting point, not a quote.
Will using the calculator hurt my credit score?
No. It does not check your real credit or run any kind of inquiry. You are just telling it your estimated range, so it has zero effect on your score.
What is the difference between a soft pull and a hard pull?
A soft pull, like pre-qualification, does not affect your score. A hard pull happens when you formally apply, and it can cost a few points. Ask a lender which kind they are doing before you apply, especially if you are just comparing options.
How long does it take to rebuild credit enough to get approved?
It varies, but many people see a meaningful move within 60 to 90 days of consistent, focused effort, utilization down, disputes filed, no new late payments. The 30/60/90 day course in the free membership walks through exactly that timeline.
What is the fastest way to raise my credit score before I apply again?
For most people it is lowering credit card utilization, since it can move within a single billing cycle. Fixing an inaccurate item through a dispute is the next fastest lever. Both are covered in the free courses.
Should I pay off my credit cards before applying for a vehicle loan?
Lowering your utilization, even partially, almost always helps before you apply. You do not need it at zero, getting each card under about 30%, and ideally under 10%, is usually enough to see a real difference.
What credit score do I need for a 0% interest rate?
0% offers are typically reserved for the strongest credit tiers, usually 720 and above, and are often manufacturer promotions on specific models rather than something any lender offers everyone.
Is a credit union better than a bank for a subprime auto loan?
Often, yes. Credit unions frequently carry more forgiving lending rules than big banks and sometimes offer meaningfully better rates for the same credit range. It is worth checking one before you assume a big bank or a Buy Here Pay Here lot are your only options.
What is Buy Here Pay Here and should I avoid it?
It is financing where the dealership itself is also the lender, usually with no traditional credit check. It can be a real option when nothing else is available, but rates and total cost tend to run high, and many of these lenders never report your payments to the credit bureaus at all, which means they cannot help you rebuild.
How many auto loan inquiries can I have without hurting my score?
Most scoring models treat multiple auto loan inquiries made within a short window, typically 14 to 45 days, as a single inquiry. That is specifically so you can rate shop without being penalized for comparing offers.
What is debt-to-income and why does it matter for a vehicle loan?
It compares your monthly debt payments to your monthly income. A lender uses it alongside your credit score, since two people with the same score can get very different offers depending on how much other debt they are already carrying.
How much of my income should go toward a vehicle payment?
A common guideline is keeping your total vehicle payment, insurance included, under roughly 15 to 20% of your take-home pay. Lenders will often approve more than that, which is exactly how people end up in a payment they cannot sustain.
Can I get an auto loan after bankruptcy?
Yes. Many lenders specialize in exactly this situation, and a discharged bankruptcy can actually help your debt-to-income by removing debt that was dragging on it. Expect a higher rate at first, with room to refinance once your score recovers.
Can I get an auto loan after a repossession?
Yes, though it usually takes some rebuilding time and a higher rate at first. The repossession's scoring impact fades faster than the seven years it can stay on your report, especially once you rebuild a streak of on time payments elsewhere.
Should I get a co-signer for my vehicle loan?
Only if their credit is meaningfully stronger than yours. A co-signer with similar credit often changes very little while still taking on full legal responsibility for the loan if you miss a payment.
What is a dispute letter and does it actually work?
It is a formal request to a credit bureau to correct something inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable on your report. It works when the underlying claim is genuinely wrong, and the free course in this membership walks through how to write one that gets a real result.
How long do late payments stay on my credit report?
Up to seven years, but their effect on your score fades well before then, especially the further behind you leave them and the more on time payments you stack up afterward.
What is credit utilization and why does it matter so much?
It is your credit card balances compared to your limits. It is one of the two biggest scoring factors, alongside payment history, and it is usually the fastest one to move since it can update within a single billing cycle.
Will closing a credit card hurt my credit score?
Often, yes, since it can shorten your average account age and reduce your total available credit, which raises your overall utilization. It is usually better to stop using a card than to close it, unless it carries a fee you no longer want to pay.
What is an authorized user and does it really help my credit?
It means someone adds your name to their existing account. If that account is old and carries low utilization, it can genuinely help, sometimes within a billing cycle or two. If it is young or maxed out, it can hurt just as easily.
How do I read my credit report?
Start with the reason codes near the bottom, then check the accounts section for anything wrong, unfamiliar, or worse than you remembered. The first course in this membership walks through a real report line by line.
What is an adverse action notice?
It is the letter a lender is legally required to send you when they decline your application, listing the specific reasons. It is one of the most useful documents you can have when you are figuring out what to fix.
Do all three credit bureaus show the same score?
Usually not exactly. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion each hold slightly different data, so your score can differ, sometimes by 20 points or more, depending on which one a lender pulls.
What courses are included in the free membership?
18 courses split across two tracks. The credit track covers reading your credit report, a 30/60/90 day rebuild plan, dispute letters that work, utilization, authorized user tradelines, starter credit products, collections and identity theft. The auto and business track covers how auto lenders score you, avoiding Buy Here Pay Here traps, your next auto loan playbook, and getting a business ready for funding: separating business and personal credit, building a vendor tradeline ladder, business credit scoring, SBA and bank loans, and alternative funding options.
What tools are included in the free membership?
Nineteen tools across credit rebuilding, auto loans and business funding readiness, including a utilization optimizer, a dispute timeline planner, an auto loan approval calculator, a refinance break-even calculator, and a business credit readiness score.
Is there really no credit card required to join?
Correct. Joining takes a name, an email and a password, nothing else. There is no trial that converts into a paid plan.
Can I cancel my membership at any time?
Yes. It is free either way, but if you ever want your account closed, message us at info@creditforward.org and we will take care of it.
How do I book the free strategy call?
Once you join free, your dashboard has a link to book your free 20-minute credit strategy call directly with Jeff Perry.
How do I reach a real person if I have a question?
Message us any time at info@creditforward.org, or use the direct messages inside your free membership once you join.
What happens after I use the calculator?
You can save your estimate to a free account, which unlocks your dashboard, all 18 courses, all 19 tools, the community, and your free strategy call. Nothing is charged and nothing is required beyond that.
My payment is too high, can I lower it without new fees?
Often, yes, through a refinance once your credit has improved enough to qualify for a better rate. The refinance break-even tool in the free membership shows you the real numbers before you commit to anything.
Can I use CreditForward if I am self employed?
Yes. Lenders often ask self employed applicants for extra income documentation, but the credit rebuilding and auto loan guidance here applies the same way. The business funding course is especially built for this situation.
What is the difference between CreditForward and a credit repair company that charges fees?
A paid credit repair company disputes items on your behalf for a recurring fee. We teach you to do it yourself, for free, with the same tools and knowledge, and we never charge a fee for credit repair services.
How do I get my business ready for funding once my credit improves?
Start with the four foundational steps: an EIN, a business bank account, a separate business address, and registering with a business credit bureau. The final course in this membership walks through all of it, plus how to match your business's age and revenue to the right type of funding.
What is a factor rate and is it different from an APR?
Yes, very different. A factor rate, common in revenue-based business funding, does not directly reveal the effective annual cost the way an APR does. Always ask a lender for the equivalent APR before you sign anything quoted as a factor rate.
Can I use these tools if I already have a vehicle loan?
Yes. The refinance break-even calculator, the trade-in equity calculator, and the credit rebuilding tools are all built for exactly this situation, whether you are trying to lower your payment or trade into something more affordable.
What states does CreditForward serve?
The educational content, courses, tools and community are available anywhere in the United States. Specific loan and funding offers still depend on which lenders operate in your state.
Do you sell my information to lenders or third parties?
No. We do not sell your information for advertising. See the full privacy policy for exactly what is collected and who can see it.
